School: Saint Kentigern Boys’ School, Auckland
Date: February 17, 2016
After ePlatform was introduced at St Kentigern Boys’ School – a number of pupils surprised their parents by reading independently at home. These students were usually reluctant readers. But as Pip Block – the school’s Arrowsmith Programme Teacher explained, the technology of ePlatform has been a “draw card and a catalyst” for those that don’t usually enjoy reading.
ePlatform as you like it.
St Kentigern introduced ePlatform to their Year 7 and 8 students in early 2015, and according to Library Services Manager Dilys Braithwaite, “It has opened up a whole new world of possibilities,” for the students. "The vast range of titles at their fingertips inspires the students to try something new, and re-read old favourites."
She says, "Our boys particularly respond to the technology aspect of this style of reading.” Also saying that being able to, “customise the platform – font style, size, colour and spacing all helps to support their reading."
The extensive customisation features have been incorporated to assist those with reading challenges, and Dilys Braithwaite has seen the benefit of these. "We believe offering eBooks has complemented and enhanced our readership and provided greater literacy opportunities for the range of abilities within senior students."
In the first six months more than 840 loans were issued to approximately 300 students at St Kentigern, and ePlatform’s popularity continues.
Key reasons for success.
